Tango. Milongas.
Tuesdays. Classes at 8:00 p.m. Milonga at 9:30 p.m.
No one can really argue with the fact that tango is a chauvenist dance. However, at this place the milonga dancers are different. Same-sex couples come here to practice their tango steps, such as "firuletes,"cortes" and "quebradas." There are also mixed couples where the woman is the one that leads. Two women dancing tango certainly draw a lot of attention, but especially if they dance it milonga-style, holding each other close. Even more so if they are not wearing the traditional women's tango-dancing attire. Instead of high heels they wear running shoes and pants under their skirts. One could imagine that this style would be frowned upon by tango purists. However, the tango dancers say that this style is not about challenging tradition, but about respecting diversity and equality and the acceptance of other ways of expressing yourself. Tango Queer, a term which literally means strange, weird or even suspicious and was used to refer to the gay, lesbian, transexual and intersex communities in a derogatory sense. Tango Queer, a place where "guapos" (macho men in Argentine dialect) wait to be asked to dance.
